Dive into meaningful conversations about healing, identity, empowerment, and social justice through the lens of powerful literature. This book club creates a supportive and inclusive space for students, staff, and faculty to explore themes related to consent, gender, relationships, resilience, and advocacy.

Each session features thought-provoking reads, ranging from memoirs and novels to poetry and short stories, that spark dialogue and reflection. Whether you're a passionate reader or just looking for a welcoming community, everyone is encouraged to participate.

For our first session, we will be reading Loter铆a: Stories by Cynthia Pelayo. Keep reading for a description of the book below!

The Mexican board game of Loter铆a is a game of chance鈥攕imilar to bingo. However, in Loter铆a, instead of matching up numbers on a game board, players match up images.

There are 54 cards in the Loter铆a game, and for this short story collection, you will find one unique story per card based on a Latin American myth, folklore, superstition, or belief鈥攚ith a slant towards the paranormal and horrific. In this deck of cards, you will find murderers, ghosts, goblins, and ghouls. This collection features creatures and monsters, vampires, werewolves, and more.

Many of these legends existed long before their European counterparts鈥攑assed throughout the Americas via word of mouth, collected just like the tales the Brothers Grimm. These are indeed fairy tales鈥擫atin American fairy tales鈥攂ut with a horrifying slant.

This book is available for loan from the Oxy Library or via Libby with your Los Angeles Public Library card.
